Welcome!
What little girl hasn’t dreamed of being a princess? Even the Pretty Woman (played by Julia Roberts) pretended to be one:
“When I was a little girl, my mama used to lock me in the attic when I was bad, which was pretty often. And I would- I would pretend I was a princess… trapped in a tower by a wicked queen. And then suddenly this knight… on a white horse with these colors flying would come charging up and draw his sword. And I would wave. And he would climb up the tower and rescue me.”
I once thought princes and princesses lived only in fairy tales. Imagine my surprise and delight when I found out that modern-day royalty still live among us.
Well, not exactly among us.
They live in castles. They have fancy titles. They can boast of lineages and coats-of-arms. But they laugh like everyone else, they love, and they go about their daily lives. This blog is dedicated to their stories. Join me as I follow the fascinating lives of the royal families all over the world!

Merry Royals, Knights of the Garter
When I was a little girl (very many years ago) I too would dream of being a princess. Alas my Prince Charming never materialised, but never mind. I was however named as the Alternative Queen in a recent newspaper article as the result of worldwide search by English Heritages to find people who have historical connections to the Anglo Saxon Royalty of England at the time of the Battle of Hastings 1066.
My family research has shown that my tree contains not only members of the original Royal family of England, but also members of the nobility such as Barons, Baronets, Knights, Knights of the Garter, Military Knights of Windsor, Sirs, Lords and a whole host of common folk.
A recent count has revealed that I have thirteen direct ancestors who were Knights of the Garter.
Is this a record ? Can anyone beat this number?
Here is a list of my very special ancestors, the first 3 were founder members.
Thomas De Beauchamp 11th Earl of Warwick 1313 – 1369 (my 19x great grand father)
Roger 2nd Earl of March De Mortimer 1328 – 1360 (my 18x great grand father)
John 2nd Baron Lord De Grey 1300 – 1359 (my 18x great grand father)
Lionel Duke of Antwerp Plantagenet 1335 – 1363 (my 18x great grand father)
John of Gaunt 1340 – 1399 (my 18x great grand father)
Henry De Percy 1st Earl of Northumberland 1341 – 1408 (my 17x great grand father)
John 3rd Baron De Neville 1341 – 1388 (my 18x great grand father)
Hugh Earl of Stafford De Stafford 1339 – 1386 (my 18x great grand father)
Henry Hotspur Lord De Percy 1364 – 1403 (my 16x great grand father)
John 5th Baron Lovell 1344 – 1408 (my 17x great grand father)
Richard 11th Earl De Vere 1365 – 1417 (my 14x great grand father)
Walter Baron Hungerford 1378 – 1449 (my 16x great grand father)
John 15th Earl De Vere 1490 – 1540 (my 11x great grand father)
The Order of the Knights of the Garter was founded in 1348 by King Edward 111
Various legends account for the origin of the Order. The most popular legend involves the “Countess of Salisbury” (possibly Joan of Kent). While she was dancing with or near King Edward at Eltham Palace her garter is said to have slipped from her leg. When the surrounding courtiers sniggered, the King picked it up and tied it to his leg, exclaiming Honi soit qui mal y pense ” which translates as, “shamed be the person who thinks evil of it” the phrase has become the motto of the Order.
Unlike other honours the Sovereign alone grants membership to the Order and is the personal gift of the Sovereign. Except for the grants of supernumerary membership, awards are made only to those with an exceptional record of service to the United Kingdom.

I come from New Zealand.
My father told me we were from an aristocratic German family, who had links with English Royalty.
He taught me his family motto “Honi soit qui mal y pense”, “evil to him whom thinks evil, plus”thou must follow as the night the day, thou must not
be false to any man” Where did this come from?
