The Merry Royals in December ‘06
Once again, it’s time for a recap of the merry royal news we’ve seen at this blog this past month.
British Royals
The British royal family are still the most talked about royals, with a variety of their official and personal affairs getting in the news. Earlier this month, there were speculations of a Christmas engagement between Prince William and Kate Middleton. Of course, now that it’s after Christmas, we know for sure that those rumors were untrue.
Prince Charles and Camilla were busy as always. Among their activities were an appearance at the Royal Variety Performance, a horsey purchase and a visit to a FareShare Depot, a charity for the homeless. Incidentally, Prince William followed suit with his own visit to a homeless shelter. Prince Charles is living up to his advocacy of a greener lifestyle, promising to give up certain perks in order to be more environmentally friendly. A summary of The Prince of Wales’ events for this year may be found in his official website.
The last party of the year was given to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s 80th birthday. The party at the Ritz was attended by members of the royal family and their friends, including Hollywood’s Joan Rivers.
Princess Anne graced a tree auction in London’s Natural History museum. Her daughter, Zara Phillips, won BBC’s Sport Award.
The report on Princess Diana’s death was released, ruling it a tragic accident. Her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, have been organizing a tribute concert to mark next year’s 10th anniversary of her passing. Tickets for that concert sold-out within minutes of being available to the public.
Earlier this year, Prince Harry graduated from Sandhurst, a milestone which was commemorated with a painting. This month, Prince William finished his own training at the elite academy. Grandmother Queen Elizabeth and the prince shared a smile or two as the monarch reviewed the line. Prince William’s family was in attendance, as well as his girlfriend Kate Middleton and her parents.
As part of our Christmas celebrations here at Merry Royals, we took a look at the traditional Christmas enjoyed by the British royals. The family, with the exception of Prince Harry who was on duty, celebrated Christmas as they always did in The Queen’s estate at Sandringham. This year, The Queen’s traditional Christmas Broadcast was available for the first time as a podcast.
Royal girlfriends were also in the spotlight. Kate got a job, which ended a lot of chatter about her state of unemployment. Prince Harry’s girl Chelsy Davy put her home up on sale, apparently in preparation for a move to the U.K.
Danish Royals
Danish royal couple Prince Frederik and Princess Mary changed some parts of their prenuptial agreement. But it’s all just precaution, as we can see that all is well in the family’s Christmas photos.
Norwegian Royals
In a tradition that goes back decades, the Norwegian Royals lit up a Christmas tree in London. We were also able to see some of their holiday photos.
Other Royal Families
The Swedish royal family graced the banquet honoring this year’s Nobel Prize winners. Princess Lilian, 91, attended the ceremony but bowed out of the lengthy banquet. The king of Bhutan relinquished the throne, giving way to his son to take his place. Liechtenstein’ borders were expanded, thanks to modern measuring devices.
Several royals celebrated their birthdays, including Japan’s 5-year-old Princess Aiko.
Royal Fashion
This month, we highlighted some royal fashion statements. We saw The Duchess of Cornwall’s favorite dress, Kate Middleton’s bag, matching shoes by royal sisters Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice. Maternity fashion had its royal representatives in Princess Maxima of the Netherlands and Princess Letizia of Spain.
