Belgium’s Prince Laurent Testifies in Fraud Case
January 9, 2007 by Maricar Macalincag

Prince Laurent, the youngest son of Belgium’s King Albert, testified in an embezzlement case involving his country’s military, former officers and businessmen. One of the accused was a former aide of the prince.
Testifying in court on Tuesday, Prince Laurent said he was aware funds used to renovate his villa came from the navy, but had no reason to suspect they were illegal. Journalist Jose Masschelin, who brought the case to the public’s attention, says all he did was question the rule of law, adding: “I think it’s a good thing.”
The case has fueled discussion of the royal salaries, which are publicly funded.
