Dutch Royals under Fire over Yacht Maintenance
Queen Beatrix and her family’s expenses are under scrutiny over the expenses incurred for the maintenance of the royal yacht “De Groene Draeck” (The Green Dragon). The yacht has been maintained by the Dutch Navy, ever since The Queen received it as a birthday gift in 1956.
Critics are saying that the royal family should cover the cost themselves, and not have to use public funds. The furor has also been fueled by rumors that some funds are unaccounted for, according to a confidential accounting report by the Ministry of Justice.
Will Queen Beatrix eventually follow the lead of her good friend, Queen Elizabeth, whose royal yacht “Britannia” was decommissioned in 1997?
