King of Bhutan No Longer Absolute Monarch
Royal rule in Bhutan is coming to an end. King Jigme Keshar Namgyal Wangchuck, 28, has given up his absolute monarchy in favor of a democracy.
“People were looking around at what is happening in south Asia and saying, ‘No thank you’,” said Kinley Dorji, who runs the state-owned newspaper, Kuensel. “But His Majesty said you can’t leave such a small, vulnerable country in the hands of only one man who was chosen by birth and not by merit.”
King Jigme has had to convince his people that a democracy, not a monarchy, would be best for the future of the country. The first elections were held today. Even though he will cease to be the ruler, the king will remain as head of state and will still have influence over his country’s affairs.
