Royal Fashion Friday: Hats at St Paul’s Cathedral

Last Friday, Queen Elizabeth and her family joined the commemorative service to honor British personnel who served in Iraq. For the solemn occasion, the British royal ladies donned neutral, somber colors and kept their hats in the more traditional range. The royal men came in military uniform, as did Princess Anne, who holds honorary military appointments.

Queen Elizabeth’s gray coat decorated with black flowers, and matching hat set the mood for the fashion of the day:

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, had the teeniest dash of color in dark green. The single feather on her hat just kept it from becoming boring. I love this coat!

 Sophie, Countess of Wessex, kept to a gray palette. This is a hat that we’ve seen more than once before.

Princess Anne proudly wears her military uniform:

Then we have husband and wife, the Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, in a nice-looking hat with what I’d guess are very fine feathers.

The rest of the royal gents wore hats in accordance with their military uniforms.

And I have to show Prince William again, here accompanying Camilla, just cause he cuts such a dashing figure.

The service they attended was held at St Paul’s Cathedral, and was officiated by the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams. Also present were Prime Minister Gordon Brown, veterans and the families of the 179 British men and women who were killed in action in Iraq, and former Prime Minister Tony Blair. In April 2009, the British government officially ended combat involvement in Iraq.
