Princess Maxima of the Netherlands officially opened a new public library in Wassenaar, the Netherlands on June 29, 2009.

The new library not only houses books and digital resources. It also includes a new youth department and a room for viewing films and movies.

Princess Alexia of the Netherlands Attends First Day of School

It seems only yesterday that Princess Alexia of the Netherlands was a little baby. Now she’s going to school!

The second daughter of Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and Crown Princess Maxima turned 4 years old just last week. This week, she’s starting class 1A at the Bloemcampschool in Wassenaar. Her mom and dad, and older sister Princess Amalia accompanied her to her first day of school.

Princess Alexia looked both excited and apprehensive about going to school as she looked up to big sister Amalia.

Royal Fashion Friday: Princess Maxima Goes Modern

Princess Maxima of the Netherlands sported a slightly different look from her usual style when she visited a fashion exhibit last week.

The Dutch Crown Princess attended the third Arnhem Mode Biennale Arnhem, Netherlands on June 5, 2009. The exhibit, which occurs every two years, brings modern fashion and film together.

Princess Maxima donned a beige military-inspired suit with a high collar, and red, white and blue bands across the waist and arms. She wore her hair in a curlier style, which is very flattering and fresh. A silver clutch and beige heels with a hardware detail complete the look.

Princess Maxima Attends Microfinance Meeting

Dutch Crown Princess Maxima, wearing a gold-toned suit, attended a conference on microfinance at the Fulcotheatre in Ijsselstein, the Netherlands on June 4, 2009.

The meeting was with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment. Princess Maxima has a degree in Economics from the Catholic University of Argentina. She has worked in the banking and finance industries in her home country, and in the U.S. and Europe. She has continued this involvement in economic issues as a working royal.

Dutch Royals Welcome Chile’s President

Queen Beatrix and her family welcome Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet at the start of her three-day visit to the Netherlands on May 25, 2009.

The welcome ceremony was at The Hague, followed by a state banquet at the Noordeinde Palace. On President Bachelet’s itinerary are visits to the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, the World War II memorial on Dam Square, the Netherlands’ largest port city Rotterdam, and Wageningen University.

Video: Queen Beatrix Releases Statement on Parade Crash

A visibly shaken Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands expressed her sympathy and shock at the car crash during the Queen’s Day parade on April 30, 2009 in Apeldoorn.

The Queen’s bus had barely passed a memorial on the street when a black car crashed into it after plowing through police barricades and hitting many bystanders. Four people were reported killed. The driver was apprehended and brought to a hospital. It is unknown what the motive was for the attack.

The car crash that happened during the birthday parade for Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands was captured on video. You’ll see the car smashing into the memorial just as the Queen’s bus was passing. The royal family is also shown reacting with shock as their bus was quickly moved out of the way. Police surrounded the car within seconds.

While I’m glad that the royal family are all OK, I feel bad for the spectators who were killed and injured. Our condolences to the victims of this horrific attack.

Car Rams Bystanders at Queen’s Day Parade

Queen Beatrix and her family greet the crowd just moments before a car crashes into bystanders during the Queen’s Day Parade on April 30, 2009.

It was supposed to be a joyous parade celebrating the birthday of Queen Beatrix in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands. But the annual national holiday on April 30, 2009 took a horrific and tragic turn when a car was driven at full-speed through the police barricades, hitting bystanders. The car stopped within yards of the Queen’s bus when it crashed into a memorial.

The Queen and her family were waving to the gathered crowds from an open bus when the incident happened. Among the royals on the bus were Crown Prince Willem-Alexander, Crown Princess Maxima, Prince Maurits and Princess Annette.

Although the incident is believed to be deliberate, the driver’s motive is unknown. Four people were reported killed, with several others gravely injured.
