Japan Celebrates the Emperor’s Birthday

Japan’s Emperor Akihito celebrated his 76th birthday today!
The Emperor’s birthday is a national holiday, which is marked by a public ceremony at the Imperial Palace. Crowds of flag-waving well-wishers gather to see the royals and greet the emperor. It’s a special day for the Japanese people. It is only one of the few days during the year that the public is allowed to enter the inner grounds of the palace.

Japan’s Prince Akishino, Princess Kiko in the Netherlands

Japanese Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko visited the Netherlands for the greater part of this week. The royal couple attended a ceremony to mark the 400th anniversary of the start of trade relations between Japan and the Netherlands.
The commemorative ceremony was held in The Hague. Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko met with Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands, as well as Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende. The itinerary for the trip also included a visit to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the Royal Library.
Princess Masako with Prince Naruhito in Yokohama

Japan’s Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako attended a tree-planting ceremony in Yokohama on Sunday, April 19, 2009. It was the first time in 15 months that the princess has been outside Tokyo for an official reason.
The tree planting was held at the Yokohama Animal Forest Park, as part of a national conservation event. Prince Naruhito and Princess Masako each planted a memorial cherry tree.
Afterwards, the royal couple watch guide dogs being trained at the training center of the Japan Guide Dog Association.
