Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, take a stroll on Seymour Island, Galapagos, Ecuador on March 17, 2009.

Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, met several interesting characters during the first day of their visit to the Galapagos Islands this week.

Lonesome George, one of the giant tortoises at the Charles Darwin Research Foundation, is the last of his subspecies. He shares his home with two female giant tortoises. The two females are members of a different subspecies from George, but close enough to be able to mate with him. Unfortunately, the 30-year efforts to extend Lonesome George’s lineage have so far been unsuccessful.

The Prince of Wales met another tortoise, this time a much smaller one, and promptly became its godfather. The prince named it after his son, Prince William, though it is unknown if the tortoise is a male or female.

The second day of the royal visit was spent at Seymour island.
