Denmark’s Golden State Coach is not a sight seen everyday. But today, the Queen’s traditional wheels made an appearance in the streets of Copenhagen.

Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik rode the coach from Amalienborg Palace to the Christianborg Palace, where they hosted a new year reception for officers of Denmark’s defense ministry and representatives of various organizations and foundations.

The gold color of the state coach doesn’t come from gold paint. The coach, also known as the Coach of King Christian VII, is covered in 24 karat gold leaf. It was made in 1840 by Henry Fife.

The Danish royals have been busy with the New Year galas that they host for various organizations in Copenhagen. Yesterday was the reception for the diplomatic corps, attended by ambassadors and other representatives to Denmark.

Queen Margrethe, Prince Henrik, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary welcomed their guests to Christiansborg Palace. The event is less formal and grand than the New Year’s Court of the Order of the Elephant, so we won’t be seeing any tiaras on the ladies this time around.

The Danish royal family stepped out in the traditional finery at the New Year’s Court of the Order of the Elephant at the Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen.

The Order of the Elephant is the highest in Denmark, and dates back to 1693. The annual gala at the beginning of the year is hosted by Queen Margrethe for members of the order, government officials and the royal court.

The Danish royals have wrapped up their visit to Vietnam, but I still have a few photos to show you. Queen Margrethe, Prince Henrik, Prince Frederik and Princess Mary have described in a press conference how much they’ve enjoyed their visit, and how they look forward to an even better relationship between the two countries.
 

The Danish royals took a stroll in the rain during their visit to the the Minh Mang Temple in the imperial city of Hue. Queen Margrethe, Prince Henrik, Prince Frederik and Princess Mary were the sixth day of their official visit to Vietnam.

The royals didn’t let the rain dampen their enthusiasm as they saw the sights, took photos and interacted with their hosts. Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik put on colorful ponchos to ward off the rain. On their 4th day in Vietnam, Denmark’s Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik put aprons on and tried their hand at making Vietnamese spring rolls.
The royal couple were at Hanoi’s Koto Restaurant to help launch an official program that teaches street children kitchen skills. KOTO stands for ‘Know One Teach One’. After their education, many of the children then go on to work in various restaurants in Hanoi. The training that the children receive, which they can use to work in the restaurant industry.

The Danish royals had their turn to host a dinner for the Vietnamese dignitaries today. Queen Margrethe, Prince Henrik, Prince Frederik and Princess Mary received President Nguyen Minh Triet for a banquet at the Temple of Literature in Hanoi.
Princess Mary’s cream off-shoulder gown was accessorized with a black ribbon on her shoulder. Queen Margrethe chose a simple blue dress for the occasion.
 

Earlier in the day, the Danish community in Vietnam had an audience with the royals during a reception at the National History Museum.

On the second day of their state visit to Vietnam, the Danish Royals were officially welcomed to the Presidential Palace in Hanoi by President Nguyen Minh Triet and his wife Tran Thi Kim Chi. Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik were joined on this trip by Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary.

The Danish royals began their 9-day visit to Vietnam yesterday, with a ride on bicycle taxis and a stop at the house where Prince Henrik spent the early years of his childhood.

Prince Henrik seemed excited to go back to his old family home in the Phan Dinh Phung district. His family had lived there for several generations, leaving in 1954. He gave Queen Margrethe, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary a tour of his childhood home and fondly recalled stories of his life there. The first son of Danish Prince Joachim and Princess Marie was christened on July 26, 2009. According to tradition, the baby’s name, Prince Henrik Carl Joachim Alain, was first revealed during the ceremony. The new prince was born on May 4, 2009.

Bishop Erik Norman Svendsen officiated at the Mogeltonder church in Denmark, where Prince Joachim and Princess Marie were married in May 2008.
